Hi. I am Michelle Houlden, owner and creative director at Maverick Studios. I’m from Shaunavon, a small town in southwestern Saskatchewan. When you grow up in a small town, you learn to value and prioritize connections — with your family, your friends, your neighbors, and the folks who run the local businesses. They’re the ones who support you. Cheer for you. Create scholarships to help you go to school. Pull you out of a snowbank when you skid off the road in a blizzard (true story, I’ve been both rescued and the rescuer.)
My dad sold John Deere farm equipment and when we were growing up, there were some days when we didn’t see much of him. He said farming doesn’t stop unless something breaks, and if he could help get a farmer back in the field, that was how bread got on the table. (Literally.) My mom sold skin care products and volunteered to do makeup for local fashion shows, grads and weddings. She said if she could help someone feel pampered on their big day, it wasn’t really work. But it was a lot of work, and she was great at it. I admired them both for their skill and dedication.
Every Saturday afternoon, my brother and I would walk down to the local movie theatre so mom could have some peace for a couple of hours. We saw a LOT of old western movies. I was always struck by how the central character was usually a lone gun who sauntered into town to save the townsfolk from some mustached villain. The maverick never saved the day alone — the people always pitched in to work together for the final showdown. And of course, there was always a really great horse.
Today, I am a writer. Designer. Creative thinker. Strategist. My skillset is unique enough that in my past job, people called me a unicorn. It's the reason I adopted a unicorn as my business mascot — she's a fierce, edgy and talented magical horse, and you'd be wise to take her seriously. I named Maverick Studios after the idea that one person with enough determination and skill can challenge established ideas and find unique solutions to tricky problems.
I have a strong work ethic. I like to think I’ve learned from the examples my parents set for me. I worked for The Western Producer for most of my career, helping to create visual information to help farmers be able to make better business decisions. Now that I’m running my own business, I’m still working with agricultural groups, small businesses, labour and non-profit groups to provide design, marketing, branding and content creation services to help them compete, grow and thrive.
My mission is simple: to work with my clients to forge better connections with their own customers. I want you to feel like you've got someone in your corner who wants you to succeed, and delivers the right communication tools to make your job easier. Work with me and I will show you new ways to reach your audience with creative and edgy designs that deliver results.
Here's what I bring to the table:
